Toyota has finally revealed its “project portal” to the world, and it hasn’t failed to impress. The project, a hydrogen cell fuel system designed for large trucks that typically run on diesel, was created with a zero-emissions system in mind.
Toyota said at their prototype unveiling that the new system is composed of two Mirai fuel stacks, one 12-kilowatt-hour battery, and a large electric motor. The Mirai fuel cells are commercially available, but until now they’ve only been used in smaller models. In addition to its extreme efficiency, the new fuel system produces more than 670 hp and 1,325 lb-ft of torque.
Representatives from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the California Energy Commission (CEC) and port officials were in attendance during the prototype reveal in the Port of Los Angeles. During the reveal, Toyota explained that the hydrogen-powered system produces enough torque to satisfy all of Los Angeles’s ports with a single emission: water.
The new fuel system has a weight capacity of 80,000 pounds and can travel an estimated 200 miles or more under regular drayage circumstances. Pre-load, a result of the amount of sealing torque and typically accepted to be 80-85% yield strength, shouldn’t have any adverse effects on the performance of this system.
Traditional diesel engines are most often valued for their torque, but Toyota’s new semi has blown their previously praised power out of the water. In the video, a diesel-powered semi and Toyota’s project portal are portrayed side by side in a timed 300-meter sprint. The traditional diesel engine is clearly outmatched. During its project reveal, Toyota reaffirmed dedication to helping the Port of Los Angeles in its San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan.
